Austria is famous for its idyllic Alpine villages and remote ski resorts, but it's also home to two of Europe's most important cultural centres. With its ornate palaces, sweeping boulevards and world class opera, Vienna represents the country's imperial past, while Salzburg's traditional spires and dramatic mountain backdrops have become a defining image of this stunning country.

Salzburg has one of Europe’s finest collections of Baroque architecture, preserved in its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Altstadt. This is a destination for the ears as well as the eyes. Mozart was born here in the 18th century, and his house remains a popular destination for those looking to pay their respects.

Capital city Vienna is also proud of its musical history, showcased in performances from the globally-renowned Vienna Philharmonic. For a taste of local life, be sure to visit one of the coffee houses that line the cobbled side streets, and try a deliciously flaky, fruity apfelstrudel, made with aromatic apples, cinnamon and raisins.

Vienna

Home to Mozart, the imperial Hofburg Palace and the Sachertorte, Vienna draws visitors fascinated by its distinguished past, which still informs a vibrant contemporary cultural scene.

The Austrian capital is known for its music, now welcoming electronica alongside opera and the classics. The Vienna State Opera house hosts numerous concerts, and is worth visiting just to see the extraordinary architecture. Pay homage to Mozart at Mozarthaus, where the composer lived for three years from 1784. There are also excellent dance clubs, if that’s more your thing.

Vienna’s status as a cultural hub has extended into the 21st century. Museumplatz is the central destination for galleries: visit the Museum of Young Art, Mumok and Secession to see works from emerging artists, and the nearby Kunsthistorisches Museum for historically significant pieces. Don’t miss the portraits and artefacts in the magnificent Hofburg Palace, offering a glimpse into the glamorous lives of Austria’s royals.
