The most popular area for tourists visiting Portugal is undoubtedly the southern Algarve, and with its sun-soaked beaches, prized golf courses, Moorish castles and majestic Sierra de Monchique mountain chain, the region certainly has plenty to offer.

That said, travellers looking for a different side to this beautiful country should venture north to Porto. The UNESCO-protected city of red rooftops and old stone churches is famous for its fortified wine. There are plenty of tasting houses along the river, which winds its way towards the vineyards themselves.

Further south, the university town of Evora is another excellent choice for those fascinated by Portugal's past. Beautiful historic buildings sit alongside restaurants and bars brought to life after dark by students and locals. A short drive west, Portugal's capital, Lisbon, is an underrated gem. Old fashioned yellow streetcars race up and down the hills and between the pastel buildings, and the city also boasts examples of important modern architecture, like the Gare do Oriente train station.
